Behind the Scenes – Interview with the Founders of CALM ELEPHANT

Tense back, stressed, poor sleep – that sounds like the standard diagnosis for modern life. Why do we all seem to get so out of balance?
Corinna:
Because in our everyday lives, we often just function. We sit too much, move too little, and constantly feel driven. The body is under constant strain – regeneration and health fall by the wayside. Back problems, sleep disorders, or mood swings define our lives.
Joel:
And that is exactly where acupressure comes in. The method is over 2,000 years old and originates from Traditional Chinese Medicine. It is primarily about activating the body's self-healing powers through pressure on specific points. That might sound esoteric at first, but it is highly physiological. Through the stimulation of the skin, the body releases happiness hormones like endorphins and oxytocin, blood circulation is promoted, and the parasympathetic nervous system is activated. That means: calm down. Relax. Let go.

Some people turn to melatonin supplements or painkillers for that. What speaks in favor of an acupressure mat?
Corinna:
The fact that it works entirely without chemicals – and at the same time acts on several levels. Many users report that they can switch off better in the evening because the mat acts like a daily ritual. Eventually, the body recognizes this stimulus – and enters a kind of relaxation mode. And those who lie on it regularly often feel more balanced and energetic during the day as well.
Joel:
Furthermore, it helps many people after exercise: sore muscles, tension, stuck fascia – all of this can be alleviated through acupressure. It reduces stress in the body and thus gives the system the opportunity to repair itself.
Nevertheless, there have already been many providers on the market. So why CALM ELEPHANT?
Joel:
Because we saw so much more potential in it. We wanted something holistic, relaxation from head to toe. When you lie flat on your back, a hollow back almost always forms. The lumbar area in particular then sags. No pressure, no acupressure – no effect. And that is where CALM ELEPHANT comes into play.

Corinna:
That is why we sat down as a family business and developed our own functional sets together with orthopedists and physiotherapists. Our pillows are adjustable in height and firmness; they support the lower back, the neck, and the legs under the hollows of the knees. An ergonomic and personally individual solution.
So not just a product, but a system?
Corinna:
Exactly. We think in sets – and in needs. Not every body is the same. Our mats consist of a core of coconut fibers – comfortable, breathable, and natural. The covers are made of a linen-cotton blend, pleasant and skin-friendly. We fill the pillows with heat-retaining buckwheat hulls.
Joel:
And don't worry about the spikes! What is challenging at first soon becomes a moment you look forward to. For us, sustainability means not only using natural materials but also creating a product that you will still be using in ten years. Everyone will find what they are looking for with us, from beginners to particularly intense advanced users.
So who should benefit from the "CALM ELEPHANT" acupressure mat?
Corinna:
Everyone who wants to take their health into their own hands! Because let's be honest: no one wants to be permanently dependent on the help of therapists and would rather do something good for themselves in the familiar environment of their own home. And if that is possible by lying quietly on a mat for 20 minutes every evening? Then that is a pretty good offer to yourself.
And how can such a set be used in everyday life?
Joel:
The beauty of it is: it requires neither much time nor a fixed place. Our users use the sets in very different ways – some in the morning right after getting up to start the day with a clear head and activated circulation. Others in the evening to calm down and sleep better.
Corinna:
Many also place the mat on the sofa or the floor while watching TV or reading; others take the set to the office. Our 2-in-1 pillow, in particular, is perfect for a little break at the desk as a foot reflexology massage and foot support. The set can be used exactly where you need it.
What other ailments can the acupressure mat help with?
Corinna:
A great many – because tension and stress often manifest themselves in very different places. Many of our users report, for example, significant relief from headaches or migraines. By reducing stress hormones like cortisol, relieving neck and shoulder muscles, and stimulating blood circulation, pressure can often be noticeably taken off the head.

Joel:
Many also use the mat specifically for menstrual cramps or inner restlessness – to help the body help itself. Through the gentle pressure on the tissue, not only is the musculature released, but the nervous system is also calmed.
Corinna:
Another area of application is the treatment of complaints in the area of the sacroiliac joint, such as SI joint syndrome. This is precisely where targeted stimulation is often missing in classic mats. Our height-adjustable lumbar pillow can be individually adjusted here to generate targeted pressure while simultaneously providing support.
Joel:
And what many underestimate: acupressure can also help with symptoms like lack of concentration or mental exhaustion. When the body is allowed to let go, the mind often comes to rest as well. You can work more focused, feel yourself better – and have more energy for the day again.
